I saw Shrigley at Hayward Gallery

The best thing was a dead rat.

Seriously.

The best thing was a dead rat. You know why it was the best? Because I hadn’t seen it before and I almost missed it.

I’m not a hater. I swear, I’m really not. You know what you’re going to get and you get it. I honestly like it better when it’s in a book that I can flick through while I’m checking Twitter, watching Come Dine With Me repeats, hungover, eating a Snickers.

I laughed. I did. A few times. Out loud. I didn’t love it. I don’t want to think about it. The exhibition made me think how grotty the gallery seemed. I don’t think it was grotty. What was I thinking?

A smile in a dark room. A suppressed urge. A rubbed out question mark.

Shrigley’s personal for me. Like god. I don’t really want to share it with anyone. I don’t want to talk about it. Especially not in a gallery full of people walking too slowly, unblinking, cramming in meaning, projecting onto a taxidermied dog in a perspex box holding a placard – ‘I’m dead’.

We’re not dead.

I didn’t hate it.

Hello/Goodbye

I disappeared for a while. I wish I could say I was typing words, colouring thoughts, painting walls, baking bread… I wasn’t. I was moving house and then I was working hard, and then I sort of stopped for a few days, but now? Now we’re back on track with a wish for an Ashish sweatshirt that says hello and goodbye.

It’s time to climb out of the mire and into momentum – plans of travel, plans of mix-tapes, plans of lying down in a bed in a swish hotel where there are ponies near and red wine in a outstretched hand, with a book that has words that I don’t stumble over, in a space that doesn’t kneel on my chest too heavily, and plans of opening ears in a dark room where most people plant feet firmly, just swaying, and then the plan to buy some threads – some sweet trousers, winter boots, a Rodarte (Radarte) tee and some shoes. Lady shoes.

So, the weekend is all about sorting out a UK break in a lovely hotel, booking flights to Copenhagen and planning a trip to end all trips – I want to see the Northern Lights, so I will.

Taking a bigger bite

Another day, another cup of tea and a bacon sandwich. This Bank Holiday weekend is full of hope and back pain. Leftfield and Aphex Twin. Packing and boxes. And my iPhone is arriving on Monday – am too excited. I’m excited because I haven’t had one yet and because now I can start to impress upon Maffews the amount of iPhone pain I’ve put up with over the years. I’m pretty sure I’m going to turn inward, but also out – hipstamatic uploads, constant tweeting, Spotify music in my earholes, watching stuff on the bus on the way to work, checking out what the world is up to. I really hate it but I’ve got to put one in my pocket soon, or else I’ll fall off the world and it’s Apple turning ways.

Here’s to a three day weekend (I doubt there’ll be the sunshine Etienne De Crecy hoped for) complete with boxes and beer.

Got involved in some Diana action a while back and this is the fruit of my loom. Think it was in Bath at Easter and it was hot. Hot hot. We ate mussels with amazing bread and then we went and had a BBQ with amazing sausages. Merguez.

Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE

Going to try and get a few decent shots today using the Silver Shade film but it’s so unpredictable that it makes me have a minor panic attack every time I take a shot. I’ll cross my fingers when I push the button…

So, that’s it. Took some shots on the LCA but, like, about two. I was not thinking about the photos. My excuse? Erm, wine, beef carpaccio and being too busy laughing my ass off.

Yes ,etc. etc. is how life is flowing these days. Flow, mow, bow, show… We are all little fish in a big bath.

Off to a wedding tomorrow, complete with open-top bus journey and beef carpaccio. Now I just need to decide whether to wear a flowery dress, or a navy wrap dress, or a tie dye affair. Decisions, decisions.

Just 2.5 more hours until this long weekend begins to unfurl. Bring it.
